Chapter 2: Country Meets City
I had no idea where I was heading; all I knew was that I had to get out of the house for a while. Away from Frank and his snide remarks, away from being closed in the four walls of home. He was right, I was feeling horny and wanted some action, but as I walked down our street and turned into Victoria Avenue, sex was the last thing on my mind.
We were fortunate in that we lived around the corner from the city's main gay street. Victoria Avenue was the gay mecca for all gay people, filled with shops, cafes, hotels, nightclubs - anything a gay man could want. Yet living so close had its drawbacks as well. It was a rare night that Frank and I had the house to ourselves, or even being home. Somehow friends had decided that our place was the meeting place before heading out for a night on the town. There were times I actually missed living in outer suburbia, like I used to before meeting Ryan and moving, where life was less "gay" and more laid back.
I walked down Victoria Avenue wrapped in my own thoughts before realising that I had reached the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Charles Parade - the end of the "gay" part of the street. I shook my head in bemusement as I realised that for the first time in ages, I had not only walked the entire street without stopping, but also had not perved on any cute guys along the way.
I turned and headed back towards home.
"Oi! Snob!" someone yelled from behind me.
I turned and looked back. There stood one of my closest and oldest friends - William.
"Hey bitch! Sorry lost in my own thoughts and didn't see you" I replied with a grin.
"Oh? Is he cute?"
"Nah nothing like that. Just a trip down memory lane, that's all" I replied, "where are you heading?"
"Was going to call in to DeLite's Bar for a quick drink. Want to come?" he asked "am catching up with Stephen and Michael".
"Ok, but only for a quickie though".
"You always say that and you are the last one to leave" chucked William.
"Yeah yeah whatever! Lets go" I replied "so how is the shop going?"
"Pretty quiet today actually. Left Julie to look after it for the rest of the day."
"Oh? That's unusual for a Sunday. Normally you are run off your feet" I said. His small fabrics store CoverUp was one of the busiest in Victoria Avenue with most drag queens patronising it for material for their outfits. He also had a small sewing room out the back, which the drag queens utilised on a regular basis.
"It's that time of year. Always goes quiet" he replied.
"So do tell. Who is the cute guy you were seen with on Thursday night?" I asked, fishing for information.
"Which one?" he asked.
"How many did you have on Thursday night?" I asked with a cheeky grin. I enjoyed playing tic-for-tac with William especially over his conquests. For someone in his late 40s, he had an endless supply of guys visiting him for "extra curricular" activities. How he managed it was one of the best-kept secrets in Victoria Avenue, and even to me, he would not divulge what his pick up routine was. Not that I needed help in that area, but it always got my curiosity. Whereas I picked up gay guys, William's trade generally was bisexual or guys experimenting.
"No one actually. Had young Troy call in for a coffee - you know the one. 22, Blonde, green eyes and nice 6-pack" he replied.
"Coffee? You only had coffee with that hot stud sitting next to you?" I asked.
"Yes, only coffee. He is having girlfriend problems again so wanted some advise".
"I know you are not going to tell me, but how the hell do you pick these guys up?" I asked, fully aware of the reply.
"Oh around" William replied, "How's Frank?"
"Don't change the subject!" I replied "but he is fine. Was going to go to the flicks with his ex Chris but that fell through. Came home and sprung me in bed with another guy that bastard. Could have killed him".
"Not the old guy you picked up last night?"
"NO! God is there anyone who does not know about last night?" I asked with a mock disgust tone.
"Umm ... sweetheart. Everyone knows. It was hard NOT to know about it" replied William.
"What do you mean?" I asked confused.
"Well let me say that unlike normally, you took over an hour saying your goodbyes to everyone last night, with this guy hanging off your arm" grinned William.
"Oh shit! You mean I introduced him to everyone ... like everyone?"
"Uh huh. And to make matters worse, you called him 'your boyfriend'" chuckled William.
"Oh fuck!" I replied. By this stage, we had reached DeLite's Bar.
I could not believe that my recollection of last night was so bad. The only other time it had happened was when someone spiked my drink without my knowledge, and ever since then I always kept my drinks within my sight.
"What do you want to drink?" asked William as we reached the bar. DeLite's Bar was one of those hotels where the owners had maintained the "non-gay" look. Had one not known, it could have been a hotel in any suburb across the country, with the only difference being the lack of women present and the guys being too "friendly".
"Double scotch. I think I need it" I replied.
"So. Is he your boyfriend? Is Mr. Single becoming Mr. Married now?" asked William jokingly.
"Of course not!" I retorted, "you know me long enough to know that he is definitely NOT my type".
"Ok, was only checking. If you had said yes, I would have belted you one!" he replied.
"Oh yeah! do it to me baby!" I replied back laughing as I took a sip of my drink, which the barman had just brought us.
"Wow!" said William.
"What?" I asked.
"Look, at the end of the bar. That guy is gorgeous" replied William pointing to this cute guy standing at the far end of the bar alone.
"Yum!" I said "Totally fuckable!”
The guy was in his mid 20s, nearly 180 cm tall, blonde-brown hair and wearing a dark blue t-shirt. Pure model material and above all else, someone new. I had not seen him around Victoria Avenue and the venues before. As William and I stared at him, the guy looked up directly at us, and smiled.
I turned away towards William who was still staring at the guy.
"I'm in love! Oh there is a god out there!" I said.
William looked at me and burst out into laughter.
"What?!" I asked rather annoyingly.
"You! You are so adorable sometimes that if we weren't best of friends, I would marry you" replied William as he gently ruffled my already messy hair.
"Well don't just sit here, go and say hello to the guy" continued William.
"No. Not interested." I replied.
"Sorry? Not interested? Since when? The look on your face and the way you are discretely looking at him says to me you want him" said William.
"I am not looking at him!" I snapped back, a bit too forcefully to be convincing.
"Ok, so why are you looking at the mirrors behind the bar, which happen to catch his reflection? Hmm?" asked William "and looking at the way he is looking back, I think you might be in luck".
"Besides, he has left" I said, as I noticed him get up and walk way into the back part of the bar. "what time are the others arriving?"
“Oh later. We didn’t organise a time. But why don’t you go for a walk.”
“Where?”
“Oh I don’t know. Maybe to the back part of the bar. You never know” replied William.
“Later” I replied as I took another sip of my drink. DeLite’s Bar was starting to get packed with newcomers most of whom were in their 30s and over. I was getting into one of my rare moods where I wanted something – or someone – but had that feeling of being lost. I don’t know what brought these moods but I hated it, as I felt totally lost and alone, even with friends around me.
I looked around searching for something, my eyes scanning everyone there. A lot of familiar faces but nothing seemed to attract my attention, despite the fact that there were guys present who I would under other circumstances, make a beeline for in the hopes of picking up. I turned and looked at William, who was busy chatting to Corey the barman.
“Excuse me, is this seat taken?” a voice from behind me asked. As I turned, I saw William turn to me and smiled.
“Nah you can have it,” I said as I turned to see who it was. My eyes looked straight into the guy’s and in a blink of an eye I realised who it was – the guy from the other side of the bar. I could have sworn my heart must have missed a beat or two. The guy was utterly gorgeous.
“Thanks. You don’t mind?” he asked.
“No not at all” I replied. I felt William gently jab me gently in the back, his subtle way of saying ‘don’t just sit there, talk to the guy’.
“I’m Jason by the way, and that’s my friend William” I said, pointing to William behind me.
“Hi, I’m Adam” he replied, sticking his hand out ready to shake my hand. I shook his hand and felt his firm grip, unusual for a gay guy.
“Haven’t seen you before. What brings you here?” I asked.
He looked straight at me, his deep blue eyes looked inquisitively at me, as if wondering why and what the next question would be. For a moment I gazed into his eyes, and then snapped back to reality.
“I am from out of town and here on holidays for about a month” he replied.
“Where you from? What do you do? Are you single? Just asking the gay 50,000 questions – just joking,” I said with smugness.
He smiled back and said, “I’m from Newport, am into advertising and single. Any more questions?”
“Yeah, one more. Do you want to have fun with a couple of gay guys that are pretty much regulars here? I mean, show you the sites and around the town?”
“Sure, why not. Don’t have any friends here anyway, so could be fun”.
I turned to William who at this stage was a gasp at my audacity at being so blunt and to the point. Knowing full well as to where I was heading, William shook his head in agreement.
“Great! So it’s all settled then” I said as I lifted my drink and took a sip "we'll show a side of this town you haven't seen before"
"I'm looking forward to it," replied Adam with a smile.
William looked at Corey, shook his head sideways and rolled his eyes. Corey simply smiled back. Both knew where this would end up and the only thing that Adam would see was the inside of Jason's bedroom.
"Ok. Ready to go?" I asked.
"Think I will pass Jason," replied William "promised the others I would wait for them here. You two go ahead and have fun".
"Ok. Come Adam, lets go," I replied "have to go home and change first, if that's okay with you".
"Sure" said Adam as he finished his drink.
Bidding the others goodbye, Adam and I walked out of DeLite's Bar and headed for home. The walk back was brisk and when we finally arrived, Frank had already left. A note on the kitchen table simply said "Gone to mum's for dinner. See you tonight".
